The only general and acceptable way to appreciate the forces on the rotor of an electrical machine is by allowing for the attractive field over an imaginary surface nearby the rotor. From the attractive field, the Maxwell stress tensor can be found, and from it the forces on the rotor, by mix the shear stress over the exterior. In the usual DC motor, if no framework current exists, the alluring field passes symmetrically through the skeleton, and there is no net torque on it. When armature current flow, it creates a transverse constituent of the compelling field, so the total field is twisted. This field has a lateral part in the air gap that is responsible for the torque on the hulk. The picture of current-carrying wires in an attractive field is of little help in considerate an actual motor.
