ELECTRICAL DISCHARG MACHINE (EDM)

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) In EDM only a few machining sequences are needed; the work piece is machined by one tool only - the wire - and on one single machine. EDM machine does not need the permanent presence of an operator. The latter can do something else and the machine can go on working and night and during weekends. EDM technology has become more accepted today for cutting carbide dies, whereas, for manufacturing punch blocks, EDM has been accepted for a number of years.

Today, with EDM, it is made out of a single block, and only takes 40 hours to produce. Furthermore it is lighter, stronger, and has thinner sides. The weight has been reduced thanks to the use of titanium, a light material which is easy to machine with EDM, but difficult to work using conventional machine.

Wire EDM technology is essential for higher tolerance parts and repeatable tooling. Tolerances are held to ±.0002 in our temperature controlled facility.

In Wire-cut EDM, a thin single-strand metal wire, usually brass, is fed through the work piece. The machine will accept work pieces 650 mm by 450 mm by 180 mm and has a cutting stroke of 320 mm by 220 mm. EDM wire-cutting systems give us the flexibility to manufacture work pieces with long machining sequences, unsupervised, at night or at week-ends, or we can quickly insert express orders without re-programming.
