The lathe machine uses a single-point-cutting tool for a variety of turning, facing, and drilling jobs. Excess metal is removed by rotating the work piece over the fixed cutting tool to form straight or tapered cylindrical shapes, grooves, shoulders and screw threads. It can also be used for facing flat surfaces on the ends of cylindrical parts.

The Lathe Machine is similar to using the Duplicate Mitered command in Design Workshop, except the Lathe machine makes a single object instead of the several objects you get from Duplicate Mitered.

If the polyline is open, the Lathe Machine will create endcaps on the lathed object. If the polyline is closed and offset from the axis of rotation, the Lathe Machine will make a torus.

Metal spinning lathe machine:

In a metalworking lathe machine, metal is removed from the workpiece using a hardened cutting tool, which is usually fixed to a solid moveable mounting called the toolpost, which is then moved against the workpiece using handwheels and/or computer controlled motors.

Woodturning lathe machine:
Woodturning machine works in two methods wood: spindle turning and faceplate turning. In spindle turning, the grain of the wood runs lengthwise, parallel to the bed of the lathe and face plate turning, the grain of the wood runs perpendicular to the axis of rotation.

Glass working lathe machine:
Glassworking lathes are similar in design to other lathes, but differ markedly in how the workpiece is modified. Glassworking lathes slowly rotate a hollow glass vessel over a fixed or variable temperature flame.
