Find Cheap and Best Knitting Machines

The best knitting machine is the machine that knits the yarn weights you need to knit, with features you desire, with the minimum of fuss, in the most enjoyable manner, in the time frame you need. And since none of us do the same thing, think the same way or have the same budget, we would not all agree on the same machine.

Knitting machines are not like sewing machines. It seems like we were born with the basics of sewing machines. Knitting machines are intimidating pieces of equipment with buttons, springs, and wires and hook enough to contact the outer world.

In general, there are two types or categories of machine, Japanese manufacture and European manufacture. The Japanese units do an excellent job of lighter knits, while the European handles a wider spectrum of fabrics.

Knitting machines are not just for acrylic yarns. You can knit all fibers—from cottons to wools, and most novelty yarns. The fabric produced using a knitting machine is of a more even texture than hand-knitted fabric, which is particularly noticeable on large areas of plain stocking stitch. This is an advantage, and saves a considerable amount of time. Many people prefer the look of hand knitting and skilled hand knitters can produce quite even fabric, while machine knitters need little skill to produce a good fabric as the machine tension does the job for them.

All machines are available in sturdy, metal models, starting at $700 and going up to several thousand dollars. But if you want to enter machine knitting at a more reasonable price, mid-gauge machines are available in plastic versions. A good plastic machine should be upgradeable via optional accessories.

Knitted suits and lace curtains are items that are usually (but not always) done on the standard bed machine. These machines have needles 4.5mm apart and the hook/latches are much smaller. Full-size knitting machines are approximately 45 inches long.

Some knitting machines have no patterning device and therefore you are limited to knitting stocking stitch with perhaps some hand-tooled stitches to create more interest in the fabric. Alternatively, automated patterning can produce beautiful multi-color fairisle (jacquard), tuck, slip, woven and lace fabrics, just by setting some buttons and pushing the carriage backwards and forwards! For automated patterning, you will need either a machine with a manual punch card mechanism or one with a built-in electronic device. Electronic machines need a power supply close by and will be more expensive to buy than punch card machines. One thing to remember - if the electronics in your machine go wrong, they are more complicated to fix than the manual punch card machines.

A knitting machine is not for everyone. Chances are you will never knit an intricate arrant sweater on a knitting machine. If you are thinking of buying a knitting machine, talk with other machine knitters before you invest your money.
