Tufting means that a cover is sewn from the top all the way to the bottom of the mattress. Tufting keeps layers of foam from shifting inside a futon mattress. Futons are usually tufted; traditional mattresses are quilted.

A carpet manufacturing term, tufts of yarn are inserted through a carpet backing to create a pile of cut and/or loop ends. This is the method that Fabrica exclusively uses to manufacture its carpet.

It can also be described as a small bunch or clump of grass, hair, feathers, wool, etc attached or growing together at the base. Tufting can also pronounced tuftin. When a person (usually female, but not exclusively) wears a garment so low cut that the top of the pubic hair shows. Usually applies to underwear, but there are more extreme cases of tufting out of trousers or a skirt.

The yarn is put on a creel (a bar with skewers) behind the tufting machine, then fed into a nylon tube that leads to the tufting needle. The needle pierces the primary backing and pushes the yarn down into a loop. Photoelectric sensors control how deeply the needles plunge into the backing, so the height of the loops can be controlled.

A looper, or flat hook, seizes and releases the loop of yarn while the needle pulls back up; the backing is shifted forward and the needle once more pierces the backing further on.
A hook for a tufting machine has an inclined ramp ground on the shank of the hook adjacent the throat.

The ramp acts as a cam surface as a knife oscillates into and out of cutting engagement with the cutting edge of the blade of the hook. The cam surface permits the tension between the knife and the hook to be increased substantially relative to the prior art by preventing heeling of the knife against the hook when the tension is increased.

Claims for tufting Machines:-

1. A tufting machine for operating on an elongate workpiece web displaced lengthwise through the machine, comprising a pair of needle bars, a respective row of needles carried by each needle bar.

2. A tufting machine according to claim 1, wherein the web-engaging device comprises a roller around which the workpiece web passes to define a loop therein.

3. A tufting machine according to claim 2, including bearings carrying said roller and set screws to displace the roller in a direction transverse to the roller axis.

4. A tufting machine according to claim 2, including bearings carrying said roller and cam means to displace said bearing and said roller carried thereby to increase the length of the workpiece web between the two rows of needles.
