An espresso machine is used to produce the traditionally Italian coffee beverage called espresso. A professional operator of such a machine is called a barista. The knowledge required in making the finest espresso is considered to be a craft, similar to artisan baking. An espresso machine also has a steam wand which is used to steam and froth milk for milk based espresso beverages such as the cappuccino and latte.
Cappuccino is a large Italian beverage prepared with espresso and foamy steamed milk. A cappuccino differs from a caffelatte, which is mostly milk and little foam.
People have been buying espresso machines for their homes, too. These machines are smaller than the commercial machines found in cafes, but they work on the same principles.
Espresso machines fall into three basic categories: Super Automatic, Semi Automatic and Manual.
An espresso is prepared using a specialized coffee machine, which uses high pressure to extract the essence of the ground coffee.
Water is poured onto the espresso machines water chamber, then ground coffee and paper filter is placed to start brewing the coffee.
The ground coffee used for an espresso machine is made from coffee beans specifically selected for this coffee variant. The beans or the ground coffee itself can be bought from coffee specialty shops. Espresso makers create a powerful and strong coffee that can really wake you up in the morning.
Traditional Pump-Driven Espresso Machine: A refinement of the piston machine is the pump-driven machine, which has become the most popular design in commercial espresso bars. Instead of using manual force, a motor-driven pump provides the force necessary for espresso brewing. Commercial or some high-end home machines are often attached directly to the plumbing of the site; lower-end home machines have built-in water reservoirs.
Super Automatic: These machines operate by automatically grinding the coffee, tamping it, and extracting in much the same way an automatic espresso machine does. The difference is they are fully self-contained; all you do is fill the bean hopper and water reservoir, or some machines are now fully-plumbed so water is drawn into the machine which eliminates the need for a water reservoir. Basically, a one stop wonder that does everything for you – grinding, tamping, pre-infusing and brewing through disposing of the used grinds. All have build-in grinders and various levels of pre programmable features.
Semi Automatic: Semi-automatic espresso machines are automatic in the sense water is delivered by a pump, rather than manual force and remaining brew pressure in the basket is dissipated with a three way valve. Semis have a port filter that you fill and lock into place you. They accept ground coffee or pods and are subcategorized as fully or semi automatics. The pressure required to brew is controlled via an electrical switch to the pump.
Manual: These machines use pre-heated water, delivered to a flexi glass chamber with a patented one-way valve. As the arms are raised, the hot water enters a pressure chamber, lowering the arms forces the water and air trapped in the pressure chamber through the finely ground coffee that has been tamped into the group. Short of its heating unit, nothing in a manual machine is electrical. A piston that is controlled by hand creates the pressure needed to brew the coffee. Pull it up to bring the water to the coffee, & down to create the pressure that forces the water through the coffee for brewing.
Automatic Espresso Machine: Automatic espresso machines are similar to semi-automatic except have a flow meter installed inline with the group head. When the programmed amount of water has flowed through the flow meter, the pump is automatically turned off and brews pressure released through a three-way solenoid valve.
